WOMEN'S HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. MORE DEBATE ABOUT BENEFITS OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
A recent widely publicized editorial is raising more questions about the true benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT is synthetic estrogen and/or progesterone designed to "replace" a woman’s depleting hormone levels at menopause. An estimated 20 million American women take some form of HRT to relieve menopausal symptoms, prevent bone loss, or reap other benefits. However, recent studies have raised doubts about the advantages of taking HRT, including whether or not HRT can reduce bone fractures.

2. RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATE NON-INVASIVE TEST FOR DETECTING COLON CANCER
Using non-invasive computed tomography (CT) may detect colon cancer as accurately as conventional colonoscopy, according to a new report.  Dubbed “virtual colonoscopy,” the new technique involves taking multiple CT scans of the patient’s colon and then reconstructing the images with a computer to create a three-dimensional picture of the colon.  While the study did reveal some limitations of virtual colonoscopy, the researchers say the technique may be useful for patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo conventional colonoscopy.

3. SOY AND BREAST CANCER
Recently, soy foods and products have generated much discussion in the healthcare industry and among the public. However, researchers have just recently begun to investigate the possible benefits soy may offer against breast cancer and other conditions. This article discusses the current research on soy.

4. HEART ATTACK FACTS
A heart attack is a serious result of coronary artery disease, a condition that occurs when the arteries become narrow or hardened due to cholesterol plaque build-up. A heart attack can occur when a coronary artery is so severely blocked that there is a significant reduction or break in the blood supply, causing damage or death to a portion of the heart muscle. Each year, 500,000 Americans die from heart attacks. This article discusses risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack, and explains how a heart attack can be diagnosed and treated.

5. GENERAL INFO ON MAMMOGRAMS
Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast. All women 40 years of age and older should have yearly screening mammograms to help detect breast cancer in early stages. This article has been written as an introduction to mammography.  Topics include how mammography is performed, breast compression during mammography, minimizing pain and discomfort during mammography, the use of skin markers and special imaging techniques, and more.

6. OVERVIEW OF BREAST LIFT SURGERY
Breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical procedure to lift and reshape severely sagging breasts. Breast lift surgery will not permanently lift the breasts, but it may reverse the effects of gravity for a period of time. An estimated 32,000 women now undergo breast lift surgery each year. This article describes how the procedure is performed and discusses possible side effects.

BREAST CANCER DISCUSSION BOARD, RECENT POST

"June, 2000, underwent left breast lumpectomy for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma & lymph node removal(clean). I completed chemo and radiation treatments. I have been experiencing a lot of joint pain that wasn't there a year ago. X-rays of my left shoulder indicated arthritis and the shoulder is quite painful. I had swelling and pain in the left ankle which is also arthritis. My oncologist seemed to think the pain was normal. My GP is the one who ordered the films and made the determination. He also stated that sometimes oncologists don't want to recognize that chemo treatments sometimes cause arthritis in some patients. He recommended a daily application of arthritis cream and suggested a cortisone injection for the shoulder. I have tried the cream but haven't noticed any great improvement. Has anyone else experienced joint pain such as this following treatment and if so, what have you done to relieve the pain. Thanks."
