BREAST HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. EXPRESSING EMOTIONS HELPS BREAST CANCER PATIENTS DEAL WITH DIAGNOSIS, IMPROVE PHYSICAL HEALTH
A new study confirms what physicians have been saying for years, that the
positive expression of emotions can help breast cancer patients deal with
their diagnosis and treatment and improve their health. Opening up to her
spouse, family, or close friends or engaging in activities such as journal
writing or artistic expression can have a significant effect on how a woman
copes with breast cancer.  Positive expression of emotions can also decrease
the number of doctor visits and help a woman achieve improved overall
health.

2. RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATE WHETHER INTRAUTERINE DEVICE CAN HELP REDUCE UTERINE CHANGES IN TAMOXIFEN USERS
The drug tamoxifen is used to help treat early and late stage breast cancer
and to help prevent the disease in women at high risk. The benefits of
tamoxifen outweigh the risks for most breast cancer patients. However, some
researchers have found that tamoxifen can increase the risk of abnormal
uterine bleeding, which can indicate uterine abnormalities or even
endometrial cancer, cancer of the lining of the uterus. Now British
researchers are investigating whether an intrauterine device can help reduce
the chances of uterine abnormalities in women who take tamoxifen.

3. STUDY FINDS AGGRESSIVENESS OF BREAST CANCER INDEPENDENT OF PATIENT'S AGE
Contrary to the widely held belief that breast cancer tends to be less
active in elderly women, researchers from the University of Chicago have
found that breast cancer is equally aggressive in women of all ages. The
study suggests that patients should be treated according to characteristics
of their breast cancer tumors, such as tumor size and lymph node status,
with less emphasis on their age. Previous studies have found that elderly
women do not typically receive aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy or
radiation therapy in addition to breast cancer surgery.

4. HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY DOES NOT FURTHER INCREASE BREAST CANCER RISK IN WOMEN WITH BENIGN BREAST DISEASE, STUDY FINDS
Having a history of proliferative breast disease can increase the chances of
developing breast cancer. However, researchers have found that taking
hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not further increase the risk for
breast cancer among post-menopausal women with proliferative breast disease.
Proliferative breast disease (also called hyperplasia) is a non-cancerous
condition characterized by an increase in the number of breast cells.

5. INS AND OUTS OF SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY
Mammographic screening is key to the early detection of breast cancer.
Screening mammography is a low-dose x-ray examination of the breast that is
performed on women with no complaints or symptoms of breast cancer. The goal
of screening mammography is to detect breast cancer when it is still too
small to be felt by a physician or the patient. This article addresses all
aspects of screening mammography, including who should have a mammogram, the
accuracy of screening mammography, how much a mammogram costs, and a
comparison of the size of lumps found with different breast exams. A
comprehensive listing of additional Imaginis.com articles on mammography is
also provided.
