1. RESEARCHERS LINK SMOKING WITH SPREAD OF BREAST CANCER TO LUNGS
While the association between smoking and breast cancer remains controversial, a new study suggests that smoking could increase the risk that breast cancer will spread to the lungs (called lung metastases). In a study of 261 women with breast cancer, the researchers found that the women who smoked were more likely to experience lung metastases than women who did not smoke. While further research is needed to better understand the relationship between breast cancer and smoking, this study is consistent with other data that show that smoking increases the risk of death from breast cancer.

2. BREAST CANCER AND PREGNANCY

3. NEW TECHNOLOGY: COMPUTER-AIDED DETECTION FOR MAMMOGRAPHY
Computer-aided detection (CAD) technology is a recent advance in the field of breast imaging. The CAD technology basically works like a second pair of eyes, reviewing a patient's mammogram film after the radiologist has already made an initial interpretation. If the computer software detects any breast abnormalities or "regions of interest" on the mammogram film, it marks them. The radiologist can then go back and review the mammogram film again to determine whether the marked areas are suspicious and require further examination with additional imaging tests or biopsy. This article explains the ins and outs of CAD, including its advantages and disadvantages.

4. WHAT IS PAGET'S DISEASE OF THE NIPPLE?
Recent, a widely circulating email has talked about a "new type of breast cancer" that appears as a sore on the nipple. This type of breast cancer is not new.   Rather, it is a rare form called Paget’s disease of the nipple, which can present itself as a rash on the nipple. The changes in the nipple usually indicate an underlying cancer in the breast ducts, often just under the nipple, which has extended onto the surface of the nipple. This article describes the signs and symptoms of Paget's disease and how it is diagnosed and treated.

BREAST CANCER DISCUSSION BOARD, RECENT POSTING

"If anyone out there has taken Femara (hopefully for 6 months or more) I would like to know how it affected you and if you had any unpleasant side effects. I recently had a lumpectomy for what they said was a non invasive cancer (DCIS). The pathology report indicated it was estrogen receptive and not receptive for anything else. My surgeon/Oncologist has prescribed this Femara as my only treatment because it works to suppress estrogen levels-somewhat like tamoxifen but I think it's supposed to have fewer side effects. He wants me to take this for 5 years. I would be glad to hear anyone's comments."
